Documents to Prepare for Importing and Exporting in Hong Kong

The Customs and Excise Department oversees protecting the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) from smuggling by enforcing licensing controls on prohibited articles and inspecting cargoes imported and exported by air, land, and sea, as well as searching aircraft, vessels, and vehicles entering and exiting the HKSAR. Below are the documentation required for Hong Kong import and export:

  1. Manifests
The person responsible for the shipping vessel or aircraft must provide details of the consignment loaded onto the ship or aircraft in a regulated form as part of customs clearance procedures. It is called Export General Manifest. Meanwhile, the carrier must notify Customs of the specifics of cargo arriving at the port of importation before the shipment arrives at the destination port.
  2. Import/export license or removal permission (if required)
The document is a form of authorization that allows the holder to import and export goods, services, and people. The holder may be an individual or company. The document is usually issued for a fixed period and can be extended with permission from the issuing authority.
  3. Copy of detention notice (if applicable)
The detention notice is a document that is used to notify the country of departure of an individual from the country. Law enforcement agencies use it to detain and process individuals who are suspected of committing a crime.
  4. Other supporting papers include a bill of lading, airway bill, invoice, packing list, and so on. A bill of lading is a document that contains information about the shipment of goods. The shipping company typically issues a bill of lading, and it is used to transfer possession of the goods from the shipper to the consignee. In airway bills, you can find all types of information about a particular flight, like details on where it departed from and arrived at, who was on board, what was transported, etc. An invoice is a document that states how much money has been received for services or products provided. It also includes details like what was sold or delivered, when it was delivered or performed, and how many units were sold or delivered.
